March’s Featured Game: Abigail Fortune and the Dreams of Azure
DEVELOPER(S): Fusoloid ENGINE: RPG Maker MV GENRE: Adventure, RPG SUMMARY: Abigail Fortune's adventures continue in Paris! As she obtains information about a mysterious treasure called "Azure Dreams", the gentlewoman thief is joined by her old friend, Marguerite "Maria" Montblanc. Together the ladies must discover the true identity of the treasure, find out the truth behind the treasure's owner, and avoid falling permanently into the most wonderful dream...
Our Interview With The Dev Team Below The Cut!
Introduce yourself! I am Heidi K., also known as Fusoloid. I'm a Finnish university student, and I've been in the RPG Maker community since the early 2010's. I got much more active in following the community after I started developing my own games, however. I love art, studying cultures, and all in all, I'm here to be creative and have a good time!
What is your project about? What inspired you to create your game initially? *Fusoloid: The Abigail Fortune series is, essentially, about the eponymous gentlewoman thief and her many adventures. I was inspired to make a story about a thief after binge-watching the first Lupin III anime series in late 2014, and after playing the demo of an RPGM game called Pumpkin Panic! around the same time, I decided to make it a game series on RPG Maker.
How long did you work on your project? *Fusoloid: I've been working on the AF series as a whole since late 2014. Proper work on Dreams of Azure started in 2017, after the release of the first game in the series, The Scarlet Fairy. Of course, even before that, I had outlined the major plot points and many of the characters, and even made some character sketches, though most of my efforts were focused on The Scarlet Fairy until it was released.
Did any other games or media influence aspects of your project? *Fusoloid: Lupin III is the obvious biggest inspiration behind the series; major characters like Abigail, Marguerite and the Interpol duo of Cynthia and Neil were inspired by the major characters of Lupin III. Games like Persona 5, the Sly Cooper series and even the Uncharted series have inspired me in one way or another. Of course, I've been inspired by other pixel RPGs too, like The Witch's House, Dreaming Mary, Virgo VS the Zodiac and the LiEat series.
Have you come across any challenges during development? How have you overcome or worked around them? *Fusoloid: One thing I've had challenges with Dreams of Azure is the more complex battle system I want to implement. Sometimes effects or features I wanted to include in the battle system weren't possible to implement, either due to the restrictions of the engine/plugin, or the complexity of the coding needed for it. Currently I've changed things so that these effects work differently than what I initially intended, but in a similar fashion.
Did any aspects of your project change over time? How does your current project differ from your initial concept? *Fusoloid: The story has probably changed the most out of all other aspects! The initial story was set in France like the current one, but the characters and story progression were completely different. Some time during 2016, I realized that the story wouldn't work as an RPG-style game too well, so I rewrote it to what it is now. Of course, that original story idea isn't completely abandoned yet...
What was your team like at the beginning? How did people join the team? If you don’t have a team, do you wish you had one or do you prefer working alone? *Fusoloid: I've worked on the series mostly by myself, but I've had some help from a certain friend of mine. She did the playtesting for The Scarlet Fairy, and also proofread and illustrated The Scarlet Emperor spinoff novella for me. I don't have any regrets about working (mostly) alone on the series, but I sometimes think I should learn a bit more about how Javascript works... a bit.
What was the best part of developing the game? *Fusoloid: Writing the story and making the art! I love writing dialogue and just writing down ideas for interactions that could be either funny or entertaining to the player or myself. Making the various character portraits is something I enjoy most about making the game's art, and I love conveying the different characters' personalities with their expressions and reactions.
Do you find yourself playing other RPG Maker games to see what you can do with the engine, or do you prefer to do your own thing? *Fusoloid: I often play other RPGM games to become inspired or to find new ideas, often times for puzzles and aesthetic stuff. For example, I would play Pocket Mirror or Dreaming Mary to get ideas for the aesthetic of Dreams of Azure's main location, and then play games like Ib or The Witch's House for puzzle ideas. Of course, I don't want to directly rip off anything, and I like doing my own thing and putting in my own twists as well.
Which character in your game do you relate to the most and why? (Alternatively: Who is your favorite character and why?) *Fusoloid: While I do like all of my character in one way or another, my favorite overall character will probably always be Abigail. She's extremely fun to write, and it's interesting to write a character who disguises her true self under a multitude of different personas. However, at the same time, there's the same person at the core of every disguise, and I want to develop that core character with every new entry in the series. And also, I just love charming rogues with a heart of gold... ♥
Looking back now, is there anything that regret/wish you had done differently? *Fusoloid: There isn't anything I regret with The Dreams of Azure, but regarding my game development journey in general, I wish I had started with something small instead of jumping straight into a bigger project. The Scarlet Fairy feels really unpolished in retrospect, and had I known more about the engine beforehand, I think I could've probably created much more creative ways of progression, as well as more interesting puzzles.
Do you plan to explore the game’s universe and characters further in subsequent projects, or leave it as-is? *Fusoloid: Of course! The Abigail Fortune series will certainly continue after Dreams of Azure, and I already have a multitude of ideas on how the series will continue. AF3 will definitely come one day, but there will be a bunch more stuff coming out before that.
With your current project, what do you look most forward to upon/after release? *Fusoloid: The reaction from the fans! I love seeing how people talk about my stuff and what they liked and enjoyed about it. There's also just the incredibly satisfying feeling of being able to complete something and releasing it into the wild.
Is there something you’re afraid of concerning the development or the release of your game? *Fusoloid: The reaction from the fans, surprisingly. While I love seeing people enjoy my stuff, I'm also extremely terrified of releasing any big project due to my fear of being judged or unjustly critiqued. If it's something big and something I spent a lot of time on, having it be called bad or terrible would be the worst thing I could think of. I think this fear stems from years of bad experiences in my youth... I've done my best to work on this, of course, but I still notice myself getting very nervous.
Do you have any advice for upcoming devs? *Fusoloid: If you're thinking about getting into game developing, start from small projects. These projects don't have to be any longer than 5 minutes, as long as you finish them and learn new things about the engine you're using. Secondly, when you start your first bigger project, WRITE EVERYTHING DOWN. From puzzles to dialogue to how the story advances, write everything down on a document of some kind so you can easily go through the progression of the plot without suffering and having to come up with things on the fly as you're making the game. And thirdly, BACK UP YOUR PROJECT FILES! Save 'em on an external hard drive, send 'em to an online cloud, send 'em to a friend; anything goes as long as your hard work will be preserved in case of disaster!!
Question from last month's featured dev @doc-saturn: What's something you learned while making this game? Is there anything you're trying to learn how to do right now? *Fusoloid: Parallax mapping! I decided to try out parallax mapping for the first time for The Dreams of Azure, and it's a lot of fun! The maps look a lot better than in The Scarlet Fairy, and it's fun to think of set pieces and decorations for the maps. However, making changes into the maps after having completed them can be a bit of a hassle...
We mods would like to thank Fusoloid for agreeing to our interview! We believe that featuring the developer and their creative process is just as important as featuring the final product. Hopefully this Q&A segment has been an entertaining and insightful experience for everyone involved!
Remember to check out Abigail Fortune and the Dreams of Azureif you haven’t already! See you next month!

Interview with Dave Whyte of Bees and Bombs
Dave Whyte is, like Wavegrower and Bill Tavis, one of the originals. This is of course a very informal history but I have heard Bees and Bombs mentioned many times as an influence as I talk to newer gif artists. He was nice enough to answer some questions from me about himself and his gifs.
Where are you from? Where you educated in the arts?
I am from Dublin, Ireland. My educational background isn’t in the arts but in physics. I first started making gifs when I was messing around with Mathematica: a piece of software I had used in an undergrad project but whose graphical capabilities piqued my interest. I was inspired by dvdp on tumblr mostly at the time.
Where do you live now? What do you do for a living?
I currently live in Dublin. I did my PhD in physics in Trinity College Dublin (my thesis was on simulation and analysis of the structure of bubbles in foam). Since finishing the PhD in 2017 I’ve been doing freelance motion graphics for a living. Most of my work is for international clients.
Why did you start making gifs? Why do you continue to make gifs?
Aside from the work I do for money, I continue to make gifs because I enjoy it! While it’s true that the majority of the clients I get found me through Twitter/Instagram/Tumblr/etc., I don’t think of them as marketing tools really; I was posting gifs with no notion of ever making money off them for too long.
How has your approach to gif making evolved? What tools do you use to create your gifs? How has that evolved?
In the very early days I used Mathematica and occasionally After Effects but an artist friend recommended quite soon after I started posting gifs that I should check out Processing (processing.org), and that is what I have used for everything since then. I think it’s a fantastic piece of software with a great community around it. More recently they have launched a Javascript library p5.js which I use for web stuff occasionally too.
Why is looping important?
I don’t know why looping is important but for my work it is. Early on I would occasionally do some sort of cheap glitch effect to mask something not looping right but it ended up not sitting right with me. With the gif format and how it displays on Twitter/Tumblr/etc. a perfect loop just fits that presentation better, for me anyway. But surely there are lots of people out there making great little gifs that don’t loop.
How have you seen gifs change since you started making them?
I think the change I’ve noticed the most since I started is just that there are more people making gifs… almost too many to keep track of sometimes. I don’t think my approach has changed too drastically. I think I find it hard to track styles and aesthetics except for when something brand new like GANs shows up and people make stuff that doesn’t look like anything before.
Do you think gifs are a unique art form?
I think I don’t know enough about art and art history to know if gifs are a unique art form. I would imagine that some of what they do aesthetically (at least in my case) has probably been done by artists in the pre-gif time. But I guess the inherent shortness of the format maybe sets it apart. In any case I think it’s cool that there are people out there who like to look at little 5 second clips I make of shapes flying around.

How to put Roleplaying on your resume
And other skills you’ve picked up along the way.
I’ve gotten so many discord messages since my last post, both from other rpers who include roleplaying on their resume and others who are hesitant to. So, for those of you who want to be able to use this as a marketable skill, or want to know how you can improve your current resume roleplay listing, I’m here to help.
Please note - I am not a professional resume writer, just a broke ass twenty-something who was written too many resumes. The examples used below are generalizations taken from my personal resumes that have resulted in me getting the job. Use your best judgement, but, if in doubt, feel free to shoot me a message!
Also, I am primarily a forum roleplayer. While this can be used for other forms of roleplaying, you may have to change more of these examples to better fit your experiences.
Tips for your basic roleplay writer
As your basic roleplay writer, you excel at mostly one thing - writing. Perhaps you’ve picked up other skills along the way, like graphics or coding, or you’ve become familiar with software like Google Docs. These are all important skills you use professionally, so be sure to include them in the Skills section of your resume. Employers often refer to these as “soft skills” and it’s extremely difficult to find employees that have those skills and actually demonstrate them, so these can really help you stand out.
But the most important thing is to be able to include some examples. Find your favorite roleplay post and include it in your portfolio. Gather together your best moodboards, signature graphics, or avatars. Link to your resource site galleries or your rp tumblr tag. Demonstrate that you actually have these skills and that they’re more than just words on paper.
Here’s an example of some of the things I list in the skills section of my resume.
Skills
Writing: website content, blog articles, social media, coding markup, collaborative articles,
Software & Languages: Google Drive, Microsoft Office, WordPress, Invision Power Board, Tumblr, Photoshop, Gimp, Pinterest. CSS, Javascript, HTML, JQuery
I also include three of my favorite roleplay posts I’ve written, and I’m building up a coding tumblr to showcase the things I’ve coded for rp, which I will include on future resumes. While hobbies sections of a resume are very outdated, this is a subtle way you can include this particular hobby. And employers generally like you more for it!
Tips for your roleplay staffer
Staffing a roleplay is, or rather should be, a whole different ballgame from being just a roleplay writer. Because, if you’ve staffed your roleplay the right way, it has now become a well of marketable content you can actually show to your potential employer. You have actual proof of your management skills and abilities you can link a live version to, even if the site has since closed. Don’t take that for granted! That kind of content is very valuable to a potential employer.
And now, aside from listing your abilities in the skills section of your resume, you have the opportunity to list your staffing experience in the list of jobs you’ve had experience with. Because your web forum is, essentially, a brand, and staffing is your job.
Aside from listing basic rp duties, if you do social media for your rp, or even advertise for it, those are marketable skills. If you use particular software to make things for your rp, like maps or timelines, ads or trailers, include that. Each rp is different, and there are many different forms of roleplaying. So tailor the below example to your experiences and include achievements that are relevant to you.
Web Community Administrator - Site Name and link, 2017-Present
Wrote, edited, and maintained all web manuals across web pages
Moderated community engagement & content across platforms to enforce community rules and regulations
Consistently maintained brand voice across publications by creating style guidelines and consistent posting rules
Collaborated with community members on site content to create engaging SEO statistics
Built a successful user and readership base by building advertising strategies across multiple web platforms.
Tips for your roleplay coder
I am partial to the rp coder, specifically of forums, because I am one! Being able to code anything is such a skill these days, and employers like it a lot more if you tell them you do it for fun. Even if you’re not applying for a coding job, it’s another fun fact about you that makes you stand out.
If you’re a coder, I would suggest having a portfolio of your work somewhere. Either on a resource site they can access as a guest (codepen is great for this) or a blog, forum, or website they can see your work on.
Here are some generic examples of things you can put on your resume, but tailor them to your specialties!
Web Forum Designer - Site or Portfolio name/link, Date-Present
Designed interactive web templates and mobile-first layouts to increase web accessibility
Maintained multiple web forums via back end control panel of Invision Power Board
Increased user engagement by ##% by designing intuitive interfaces
Built brand style guidelines to improve brand recognition, increasing website hits by ##%
Tips - and disclaimers - for everyone
The best tip I can give to anyone about writing a resume is to tailor each resume to the job you are applying for. Use keywords used in the job listing. Use terms like KPI or ROI where necessary. Use specific examples of the things you’ve done in concise sentences. Where you can, avoid being vague. Show your worth. Link examples!
The examples I used above are very generic and are meant to be used as a place to start from for everybody. I cannot stress it enough that you still need to tailor these examples to your experience and skills. For example, if you designed interactive web templates, link to your coding tumblr tag or resource gallery. If you wrote and maintained web manuals (see site rules, plot, member groups, etc.), link to that forum or those pages or put a (see below) and include them in the examples you send along with your resume. Use percentages where appropriate and include trackable data where you can to help illustrate your positive impact on that site.
However, when putting your resume into website instead of uploading it as a .pdf or .doc, this can be difficult. So use your best judgement.
How to tell a potential employer you roleplay while in an interview
So now that you’ve gotten through writing your resume, let’s assume you got the interview! Congratulations! You used your skills to stand out a little bit from the 800 other applicants that put in for the job. But you still have to make an impression out of the 20 other suits coming in for the interview. *Gulp*
I’ve found that the easiest way is to mention it when they ask you the infamous “Tell me about yourself” question. This question is your elevator pitch, so work it in in a way that’s quick and will make them want to ask you more about it later. Don’t make it the focus, just drop in a line and move on. For example:
“I’ve been working in media for the last five years, but I would like to focus on web media in particular. I’ve been writing for websites in my free time for the last decade, and found this is the area I’m most passionate about...” I’ll let you imagine how the rest of that elevator pitch goes.
Now my interviewer will probably ask me about all this experience I have writing for web that’s not exactly spelled out on my resume. But I’ll have those experiences, either listed in my skills section or as a job listing, to refer them back to.
So now you’re probably wondering, when they do ask you about it, how to not be weird about it. Because rp is...actually really weird I mean the amount of sex I write about is unreal, yo. But you really only need get into the basics. Tell them you enjoy writing, and that you enjoy writing collaboratively. And through that passion, you’ve learned how to effectively manage web communities or taught yourself CSS. When you talk about your passions in an interview and how they’ve lead you to pursue professional advancement, you really stand out. You become “that girl who loved writing so much she became this dope ass graphic designer” or “that guy who loved writing so much he became this insane web developer.” It shows not just passion, but a breadth of skills and curiosities and gives you much more potential to grow within a position than other candidates.
While talking about your roleplay experience, offer to send them examples of your work when you get home. The amount of times I’ve mentioned my creative passions in an interview and had the non-creative interviewer want to know more is too damn high. But not only does that give you the opportunity to send a thank you email, but gives them something to click on and remember you by. Which is a make it or break it part of most interviews.
Thanks for coming to my TED Talk
That’s all the advice I’ve got for you, kids. I apologize for it being so vague, but I wanted this to be usable by the largest amount of roleplayers it could be. If you have questions, or want to know how it could be used to highlight your own skills more, feel free to drop me an ask or friend me on discord and shoot me a message! I’m always happy to offer some suggestions to you.
And if you’re already doing all of this, why don’t you share your own experiences? How has using rp on a resume helped you? What other tips do you have? And how can others make the most of their experiences to help them?

What is the technology behind Signal?
Encrypted messaging app Signal is witnessing tremendous growth as it has now been ruling at position 1 on the “Top Free Apps” section of Apple and Google’s App Store (in 40 countries). On the other hand, WhatsApp is seeing a decline following a major update concerning the privacy of more than 2 billion users. Owing to this, WhatsApp (by Facebook) was forced to release clarifications regarding what information will be used and in what sense.Let’s dissect Signal
Signal is an independent nonprofit. They are not tied to any major tech giants and will never be acquired by the other. All the development is possible by grants and donations made by people like you.
In 2017, Brian Acton, co-founder of WhatsApp, left WhatsApp. Brian in an interview with Forbes stated he left over a dispute with Facebook regarding the monetization of WhatsApp. He voluntarily left $850 million in unvested options a few months before vesting was completed. He also noted that he was coached by Facebook executives to mislead European regulators regarding Facebook’s intention to merge Facebook and WhatsApp user data. In 2018,Acton invested $50 million in Signal Foundation, a cheque to keep the games on. Signal from then on relies on grants and donations.
“If Signal gets to a billion users, that’s a billion donors. All we have to do is get you so excited about Signal that you want to give us a dollar or 50 rupees. The idea is that we want to earn that donation. The only way to earn that donation is building an innovative and delightful product. That’s a better relationship in my opinion” -Brian Acton
After the buzz of the recent WhatsApp updates, Elon Musk tweeted and told his followers to use Signal.
Use Signal — Elon Musk (@elonmusk) January 7, 2021
Signal instantly saw a surge in the user base. The irony is a stock named Signal Advanced that is absolutely unrelated to the project sees a spike of 1100%. (Source:CNBC)
Providing the best alternative to any instant messaging providing end-to-end encryption, Signal in less than 12 hours became talk-of-the-town (globe to be precise).
Let’s briefly discuss the Technology used behind Signal
Signal forAndroidis built using Java, Signal for Desktop is developed on JavaScript, Signal foriOS, and developed using Swift and the server is built in Java.
Signal’s Future Plans
The company recently hosted Ask me Anything (AMA) on reddit in order to answer any questions regarding their business standards, gain feedback from old and new users, and interact with the users.
Few possible major updates include:
User ID System: Telegram has adapted this system, where a user can pick a unique id and can just share this id, allowing the user’s to keep even their phone number secret.
Will they be able to sustain the application with this increasing user base without Ads? Signal is structured as a non-profit and is supported by billions of users, similar to organizations like Wikipedia. They will never sell ads and have designed the app in a manner that they know nothing about their users, and so there is no chance of target ads.
Working on Backups and automatic chat transfer on Android/iOS. Support for simple markdown like bold, strikethrough, underline, etc.
The company is aware of Linux users and will probably roll out distributions for officially supported versions in the future.
Localization The app is currently localized into more than 100 languages. They will keep doing so for other languages as well.
Owing to significant growth and answering several questions, the organization with less than 50 members was on foot for hours.
“The growth is just amazing, it’s been so fast in the last 72 hours that not too many of us have gotten very much sleep. That’s a good problem.” -Brian Acton
Signal is currently hiring for 5 positions if you are an Android Developer, Desktop Developer, Rust Developer, iOS Developer, Server Developer, read about the rolehereand hit them up!
Have you migrated to Signal? What concerns you for this move? Do let us know in the comments!

#THINKING ROCK ANDROID SOFTWARE#
Unfortunately, rules are set by the companies, not the candidates.
#THINKING ROCK ANDROID SOFTWARE#
At companies like Facebook and Google, the people are software engineers first, domain experts second. It is uncommon for front-end engineers to implement some of the complex algorithms tested in interviews. As a Front End Engineer myself, I can empathize with them.įront end is a specialized domain where engineers have to care about many issues related to browser compatibilities, the Document Object Model, JavaScript performance, CSS layouts, and so on. For example, writing a maze solving algorithm and merging two sorted lists of numbers. Front End Engineers like to rant about how the current hiring process is broken because technical interviews can include skills not related to front-end development. My recent job search has led me on a journey to improve my coding interview skills. Interviewing is a skill that you can get better at by studying, preparing, and practicing for it. I used to think that being able to think, code, and communicate simultaneously was an impossible feat, until I realized that most people are just not good at coding interviews when they first start out. What’s worse is that as an interviewee, you’re encouraged to communicate your thought process out loud to the interviewer. It’s stressful to have to produce (working) code in an interview, while someone scrutinizes every keystroke that you make. Naturally, I have forgotten quite a bit about these algorithms and data structures, which I learned mostly during my freshmen and sophomore years of college. Many of the algorithmic concepts tested in coding interviews are not what I usually use at work, where I am a Front End Engineer (web). Experienced candidates can also expect System Design questions, but that is out of the scope of this post. In this post, I’ll be sharing the insights and tips I gained along the way.
#THINKING ROCK ANDROID HOW TO#
Hence I spent the last three months figuring out how to improve my coding interview skills and eventually received offers from big tech companies like Google, Facebook, Airbnb, Lyft, Dropbox and more. So at that point, I decided to share what I'd learned in this article.Īnd I've just updated it for 2022 so it'll be super useful and relevant if you're job hunting now.ĭespite scoring decent grades in both my CS101 Algorithm class and my Data Structures class in university, I shudder at the thought of going through a coding interview that focuses on algorithms. I've moved back to paper capture for the moment.Īny thoughts, ideas, alternative suggestions? I'm on a W7 machine and would indeed like to sync with a Droid.Back in 2017, I went through some coding interviews and got offers from several large tech companies. But I have no way of getting my questions answered and figuring out whether I ought to spend money.
#THINKING ROCK ANDROID ANDROID#
I know they are still releasing the one recent news item is that there's an Android version (that will only work with the paid desktop). I also notice that there's really not much activity on the wiki, and much of their website refers to dates that are at least a year old. But now I am wondering if I picked an alternative that's dying.
#THINKING ROCK ANDROID UPGRADE#
there seems to be no other way to get to themĭepending on the answers to these questions I might have been quite willing to upgrade to the paid version.
their "all users" contact us email doesn't work.
They've suspended new wiki members "because of spam".
Naturally the process of getting started resulted in some questions, which is when I discovered: After doing some research, I downloaded the free version of Thinking Rock.

TS4 XML Compare will help you update any mods that become incompatible with a patch by comparing the old version to the new version.
Now that you have it open, go through the Options and set them as I have them below:.
Once installed, tick Launch WinMerge, then click Finish.
Go through the installing process and select your desired settings. If you’re unsure of what to pick, just leave them as they are and press Next.
Find where you downloaded it to on your computer, then double-click it.
Another window (or tab) will come up and it will automatically download.
Click the link above, then click the Download Now! button.
It’s required for TS4 XML Compare that we’re installing next. You’ll need WinMerge to check if your mods are compatible with new patches.
Close the program and it’s ready to go for the upcoming tutorials.
Once you have all of the settings done, go ahead and click the Save button in the Settings window.
Check to make sure the Sims 4 Path and Sims 4 Documents paths are set correctly.
Now that it’s open, click on Settings in the upper-left:.
Once it’s done installing, tick Launch Sims 4 Studio, then click Finish.
Once it’s done downloading, find where you downloaded it to on your computer and double-click the icon.
Scroll down and click on the Installer link to download:.
Now click on the link that says Sims 4 Studio version number (name) – Open Beta, as shown below (the version number/name will change as it receives updates):.
I’ve always used the Beta regardless and have had no issues. Note – The Community Tested Version was not available at the time that I wrote this guide, once it is you can use either one.
Click on Download Sims 4 Studio – Open Beta Version.
Click the link above, then Register (if needed) and Log in.
Most of these tutorials use Sims 4 Studio. I prefer Sims 4 Studio because it has almost everything you need to create Mods/CC all in one program.

Recruitment Statistics
How much does it cost to hire someone? If you want to get started with recruitment, you might be wondering where to start. There are plenty of resources out there to help you, from job boards to social media platforms. Learn more: https://blog.hirenest.com/20-latest-recruitment-statistics-that-you-should-know/
Recruiting is a time consuming task, especially if you don’t have experience or expertise in recruiting. The good thing is that there are lots of tools available to help you manage the whole process efficiently.
There are various ways to recruit employees. Some companies prefer to go through their existing network, while others choose to advertise their jobs on job boards. Regardless of the method, there are some things you should consider before starting to look for new hires. First, decide what type of candidate you’d like to attract. Are you looking for people who already work at your company? Or do you want to find candidates who would fit into your culture and values? Think about the skills and qualifications needed for the role, and whether you’d prefer to focus on internal or external applicants.
Once you know what kind of person you’re looking for, think about the qualities you’d like them to possess. Do they need to be highly skilled? Have strong communication skills? Be able to work independently? What will motivate them to join your team? You can find out more in our article: https://blog.hirenest.com/20-latest-recruitment-statistics-that-you-should-know/
To answer this question, we first need to understand why people leave their current positions. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, around one third of all workers change jobs every year. This means that most people will probably move between different roles throughout their career.
Hiring Statistics
The average salary for a software engineer in 2017 was $110,000 per year according to Glassdoor.com. That number has increased by 16% since 2015. Software engineers typically work 40 hours per week and earn overtime pay if they exceed those hours.
In addition to salary, software developers may receive bonuses based on performance metrics like code quality and bug counts. They may also receive stock options, which allow them to profit from company growth.
If you want to become a developer, it helps to know what languages and frameworks are used most often. For example, JavaScript is the language of web browsers and NodeJS is the server side framework of choice. Python is another popular option because it's easy to learn and powerful enough for many applications.
The average interview lasts between 30 minutes and one hour. Most candidates spend around 20 minutes preparing for the interview before they walk into the room.
Once inside the interview room, it takes an average candidate approximately 15 minutes to prepare for the first question. This includes reading through the job description and researching the company. After this preparation phase, most people take another 10–15 minutes to answer the first question.
Diversity in Hiring
The diversity in hiring statistic comes from a study by the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER) which found that companies with greater racial and ethnic diversity tend to perform better financially than those without it. This was true across industries and regions, but especially among small businesses.
In fact, the researchers found that “diversity has a positive effect on financial performance, regardless of industry or region.” They concluded that this may be because diverse teams are able to solve problems more quickly and creatively.
Recruiting and Hiring Statistics for HR
The most common reasons people leave jobs include not being challenged enough at work, feeling undervalued, having too many demands placed upon them, and not receiving adequate training or feedback. In addition to salary, job satisfaction is another important factor to consider when choosing a career path. If you don't like what you're doing, it's hard to stay motivated and engaged. A study published in the Journal of Applied Psychology found that employees who were given challenging assignments reported higher levels of job satisfaction than those who weren't. The average cost of hiring someone new is $2,000-$3,000 per year. This includes recruiting costs, interviewing candidates, screening resumes/CVs, conducting reference checks, and onboarding. It doesn't take into consideration the lost productivity from the employee who quit or was fired.
Resume Statistics
The average resume has only three bullet points. In fact, many resumes have just one bullet point. This is because most people don't know what they want to say. They're not sure if it's worth writing down all those things they've done. So they write down the first thing that comes into their head.
What do I mean by bullet points? Bullet points are short sentences that describe something important. For example, "I'm a hard worker" or "I love animals." These are called bullets because they're easy to read. If someone reads them out loud, he'll sound like he's reading from a list.
Remote Work & Contractor Statistics
The most common type of remote work is freelancing. Freelancers typically do not receive health insurance coverage through their employers, so they must pay out of pocket for any medical expenses. In addition, many freelancers find it difficult to build savings because they don’t earn steady income from one month to the next.
The second most common type of remote workers are contractors who work for companies but are not employees. These individuals often enjoy better benefits than freelancers, including access to employer-provided health insurance plans. They may also have access to paid vacation days and sick leave. However, contractors still struggle to save money because they aren’t guaranteed a consistent paycheck each week. The third most common type of remote worker is self-employed. This includes people like consultants, independent contractors, and entrepreneurs. Self-employed workers typically set their own hours and choose which clients to accept. They also don’t receive any benefits from their employers, so they must pay out of pocket for things like healthcare coverage and retirement savings.
While working remotely has its downsides, it does offer some advantages. For example, many remote workers report feeling less stressed at home than they do during the day. Additionally, they tend to feel more productive and creative when they’re away from the office. They also find that they’re able to focus better without distractions around them.
Conclusion
The average recruiter spends about 30% of his time searching for new talent. This includes reading job boards, social media sites, company websites, blogs, etc. In addition, recruiters spend 20-30% of their time sending out resumes and cover letters. They also spend 10-20% of their time interviewing candidates. So, when we add up all those hours spent looking for new talent, we find that recruiters spend about 60% of their time doing recruitment-related activities. Nice Horse is currently touring across Canada and we caught up with them before their show in Kitchener, Ontario on Tuesday, where they were opening for The Washboard Union.
It’s been a while since Boots and Hearts 2017 when we chatted with Nice Horse last and there have been some changes. Most notably there’s been a lineup change on the guitar. Tara McLeod has stepped in for Kaley Debra. Tara brings some serious guitar chops to the band. She’s been shredding since the age of 12 and joined acclaimed metal band Kittie in 2005. Additional credits include studio work with Before the Damned, Shawn Desman, and Fefe Dobson.
We met up in the dressing room at Kitchener’s Centre in the Square but we were fortunate enough to be experiencing a beautiful, warm, late October day, and we took full advantage of it and suggested we head outside for our chat.
This slideshow requires JavaScript.
We had a few distractions before getting started including a puppy visitor, a fan who spotted us, and asked if he could get a photo with the band. There was a lot of laughter, and we may have even been told by people passing by, that we were having too much fun. We were having a lot of fun.
I started off the official questions by asking about their YouTube video series “Bandsplainin“. If you’re a fan of Nice Horse, you’ll know that in March of this year, they released a super fun video for their song Mansplainin‘. It’s gorgeous and carries a great message. The definition of “mansplain” is: (of a man) explain (something) to someone, typically a woman, in a manner regarded as condescending or patronizing. They took it upon themselves, during the year to turn it around and explain some things to some of our favourite bands.
Nice Horse has bandsplained Paul Brandt, James Barker, Aaron Goodvin, Midland, Clayton Bellamy, Jeff Dalziel, but our favourite bandsplainin’ video may have been Brett Kissel. Take a moment, watch them all. I promise you won’t be disappointed.
I wanted to know if there’d be more bandsplainin’ videos coming and Katie reassured me that there would be. She let us know that bands have been asking to be bandsplained, and we’re very glad to hear it. There was even talk of possibly bandsplainin’ The Washboard Union!
At this point, I switched gears and asked about Coalition Music. Coalition Music mentored the band before to managing them, and they were always available to answer questions. If they didn’t know an answer, they found someone who did. Coalition runs Canada’s Music Incubator. “Canada’s Music Incubator (CMI) is a not-for-profit incubator based in Toronto with a mandate to help artists and artist managers evolve from starter companies into sustainable businesses through hands-on networking, mentoring and collaboration.”
Coalition helped to guide them towards taking the Nice Horse project more seriously, and while they always have a fun horse pun for us, they’re taking this business very seriously. They support all of their artists, but they also expressed that the artists support each other. It’s the story we hear over and over again in Canadian music, it’s like a family.
I managed to sneak a question about Johnson Crook, one of my favourite Toronto bands because I knew they had a relationship. Turns out Nice Horse had a relationship with Johnson Crook before their Coalition days, and one of the first shows Brandi did was with Noel Johnson, before his Johnson Crook days. Brandi talked about being in a band with Krista, and the two of them bringing Noel out on tour. There were some fun stories, but we’re going to make you ask Noel about the PlayStation.
Katie mentioned that she knew Eric at Coalition through Simple Plan. Simple Plan used to record at a recording studio where Katie worked, and Sebastian pointed Katie in Eric’s direction. Simple Plan continues to support Nice Horse through their journey.
Next on my list of “Must Asks” was, “Tell one thing that your fans don’t know about you.”. Tara) “Everything! I have recently admitted to the world that I’m super domestic.” Brandi) “I’m a way more open book. I’m a total tea fanatic and my favourite thing about being off of tour, is going home, and I have my special tea kettle that boils the water to the perfect temperature, and Krista got me this milk frother for Christmas one year, and I dream about going home and making myself the best matcha latte.” Katie) “I can’t think of anything that people don’t know about me, let Krista go first.” After Krista answered, it came out that Katie is petrified of snakes and spiders and for that reasons, she’ll never go to Australia. Krista) “Most of my home decor I purchase during Halloween and the week following. I have little skull shot glasses, little plates with tasteful skeletons on them and Brandi just got me a pillow that has skeletons doing yoga on it.”
I had to ask about new music. Nice Horse has a brand new single out for Six String Outlaw, and they’re calling this one The Sundown Remix. The remix sounds very different, and part of that’s because Tara’s put her own spin on the guitar parts. Have a listen.
Katie also told us that they were just in the studio two weeks ago working on brand new songs and that we expect to hear them in early next year. Hopefully February.
We wrapped up our interview, and Nice Horse got back to preparing for the show. Later that evening they took the stage by storm. Full out energy and enthusiasm. They told us during their set that one of their very first shows was in this venue when they opened for Tom Cochrane. It was good to have them back.
Their set included Six String Outlaw, Jim, Jack, Johnnie & Jose, Tonight and more. They closed out with Pony Up and energized the crowd. They did an amazing job of getting the audience ready for The Washboard Union. As their set ended the ladies behind me asked “What was their name, they were great.” I was happy to tell them.

Nice Horse plays in Red Deer on November 1st with Meghan Patrick, Medicine Hat on November 2nd with Lindsay Ell, followed by four dates with The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band and then they’ll finish up the tour with The Washboard Union. Look for dates in your city and get out and see this band. You won’t regret it.
Before we let them go, we got Nice Horse to do a round of 5 Quick Questions with us.
5 Quick Questions with Nice Horse
Q1) If you’re in charge of the music on a road trip, and can only pick one album to play on repeat, what album do you choose? NH) “St. Vincent’s Actor.“
Q2) Do you have any pre-show rituals? NH) “Taking a nap, in a dream world.”
Q3) What’s your favourite season? NH) “Summer.”
Q4)Is there a band or artist you think people should be paying more attention to? NH) “Dan Davidson, all the ladies, any woman.” Q5) Is there anything else you want us to share with our readers that we haven’t touched on. NH) “The tour is the thing because after that we might take a small break. But during that small break, we’ll be shooting a music video in Hawaii, so.” We found out that the video will be for one of their new songs!

At least on Amazon, the potential buyer knows that a customer who left a review bought the product because it’s verified by Amazon. A responsively designed website is dynamic, adaptive and built from the ground up for an evolving internet. Where do you do the vast majority of your browsing nowadays? For some of us, it’ll still be the classic desktop or laptop, but for a huge percentage, it’s mobile devices. That’s exactly why it’s crucial for websites to be responsively designed. Tom Booth is an author, illustrator, and art director. Born on the twelfth day of the twelfth month, Tom made his earliest marks — sometimes on his parents’ antique kitchen table — growing up just outside of Philadelphia. Tom has had the good fortune to work with Macmillan, Simon & Schuster, Workman Publishing, Nicktoons, and Scholastic. Tom Booth attended Hamilton College where he majored in history and mark-making, otherwise known as studio art. After graduating, Tom moved to New York City to begin working for Scholastic, so that he could afford a table for more mark making. Eventually, Tom made enough marks to convince the wonderful publishers at Simon & Schuster that he was ready for his first picture book, Derek Jeter Presents Night at the Stadium, which became a #1 bestseller on Amazon. Currently, Tom lives in Brooklyn with his fiancée, one normal cat named Luna, and one highly unstable cat named Rory.

Welcome to New York Comic Con!
Where you can’t save the world alone!
Known to have over 180,000 attendants, and host the world’s biggest stars and creators of the multi-billion dollar nerd-culture inspirations. There are countless things NYCC 2017 has done, but some highlights in the world of DC Comics include their DC 25th Anniversary panels, starring Kevin Conroy, Bruce Timm, and Tara Strong, along with Wonder Woman’s voice actress from Infinite Crisis, and Jason O’Mara (Batman’s voice in over 9 animated films), so it was a big year for the DCU!
Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamil hosted a terrific panel, where Conroy beautifully sang the famous “I Am Blue” live. Several other talents such as Jim Lee, Greg Capullo, Scott Snyder, and Tom King made their appearance. Brilliant artists and writers such as Justice League/Power Ranger‘s artist Stephen Bryne and Wonder Woman‘s Emanuela Lupacchino walked and ruled the Artist’s Alley at NYCC.
Famous California artist, Kristen Cummings, did an entire homage to Superman using ONLY jelly beans, and it was unbelievable! She makes art and the man looks just delicious!
And the cosplays were to die for:
